This Spring DuCAP developed a pilot program that would allow teens to intern with a local business for just one day. We coined it “Intern-for-a-day”. In partnership with the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and their Young Professional Network, we were able to pull professionals from the YPN to host teens in their work space.

Every professional shared different insights on their career, office, daily activities, and what it is like in their field. Teens applied and were placed based on their listed interests.

On June 13th and 14th, we had students out on their intern assignments.

Mark Long hosted teens with Flint Rock at Green Tree Studios as they recorded podcasts for “The Local”

Robb Davidson took teens off sight with his company, Axiom Media Group, for a brand photoshoot.

Hannah Ewoldt with DuCAP met with teens on local volunteering, community partnerships and preparing for college.

TJ Luby met with students to discuss his role at Merrill Lynch and the financial sector.

The teens shared:

“I enjoyed most the first hand experience I got from the program, I got to use tools used for controlling the cameras and controlling the audio for podcasts. Equally I enjoyed getting to learn and listen to people who are interested in the same things I am and decided to pursue those interests and flourish them into full on careers.” Alex R.

“I enjoyed being able to ask as many questions that I needed. It was a one on one conversation that I needed right before I start college in the fall.” Ashlee T.

“Hannah gave a lot of information on the importance of networking and insight into professional settings. For instance, I know exactly what to wear to an interview.” Katelyn G.

Following their day, teens had the opportunity to join the Young Professional Network at their Open House at 302 South in Wheaton. The teens were able to mingle with young professionals and their hosts from their day.

DuCAP will be hosting future “Intern-for-a-day” events this fall! For more information on becoming an involved professional or to participate as a teen, reach out to us at info@ducap.org.
